Launched in 2016, the sightseeing tram is a one-of-a-kind, brand new service initiated by Hong Kong Tramways. The aim was to provide a unique sightseeing experience to tourists, providing a living, evolving connection between Hong Kong’s colorful history and modern culture.
The design of the sightseeing tram involved extensive research into the Hong Kong Tramways archive. The exterior of the tram is inspired by a 2nd generation tram from the 1920s, featuring an open air upper desk as well as freestanding front signage box. The structure of this remodeled tram uses one of the two remaining antique tram timber structures. The burgundy colour on the lower deck exterior is also inspired by older tram models, differentiating itself from the existing green coloured party trams. A unique feature of the upper deck is the hand painted subtle wood grain pattern to enhance it’s antique look. Two LED strip lights wrap around the lower deck and upper deck, providing a gentle ambient wash to the exterior of the tram at night.
Our team worked extensively with external consultants and engineers to ensure the interior retained as much of its existing elements as possible, whilst allowing for the integration of new AV equipment to facilitate the sight-seeing experience.
